Brasilata, one of the largest Brazilian steel container manufacturers is responsible for the development and production of the new can for the Extra brand powder detergent (photo 1). The company has manufacturing units located in São Paulo (SP), Estrela (RS) and Rio Verde (GO) and 900 employees.
Brasilata, manufacturer of the new Plus and Biplus closure cans, both of which are certified by Brasil Premium, the worldwide seal of quality approved by the MDIC – the Development, Industry and Foreign Trade Ministry, for the 2001 and 2002 cycles, has dedicated itself to developing innovative containers which have won successive international packaging market awards.
Toward this project, in partnership with the Extra chain of hypermarkets, under the Pão de Açúcar (Cia. Brasileira de Distribuição), Brasilata has produced a container which guarantees an effective barrier against absorption of moisture by the powder detergent, thereby providing a solution to this common consumer complaint.
Evaluation tests conducted by the CSN Research Center comparing the Brasilata container and conventional soap packages, have very clearly shown that powder detergent packed in metallic containers retains the same physical aspects after opening, i.e., fine powder with few clumps and it is easily removed from inside the packaging.
On the other hand, conventional cardboard powder detergent containers have been proven to absorb more moisture after the first opening and the container becomes less resistant, loosing its shape. The conventional packaging can also crumble and the inner lining can gradually come unglued. The soap powder becomes moister forming clumps, which cling to the sides of the box, making it more difficult to handle.
The Extra powder detergent is delivered to the chain stores in metallic lithographed containers, which are lined inside with a special varnish. The can lid and the bottom are also lined with the same special gold colored varnish, which is appropriate for withstanding the elements of the laundry room environment. Moreover, the conventional welded side seam used on the body of the can has been replaced by a cemented side seam also to endure this harsh environment.
The exclusive closure system also comprises a transparent plastic lid, inspired by the Brasilata Biplus WPO – World Organization – WPO award winning Closure, which enables the product to be seen.
The new closure, which is named Bat-plus®, has a ring cord located on the outside (photo 2), to help prevent retention of product in the inside of the can during use. The ring is also slightly tapered (in the shape of a funnel) to help guide the flow of the packed product and is made of a reinforced steel sheet (.27mm thick), produced by CSN. A new plastic lid was developed for this innovative ring, suitable for the external cord (photo 3).
Brasilata believes that this container could change the current market standard for powder detergent container in view of its highly functional aspects.
